President Ilham Aliyev gave his tasks and instructions to relevant institutions regarding the holding of COP29 in Azerbaijan
Armenia’s withdrawal of its candidacy to host COP29 in favor of Azerbaijan is considered by our state as a manifestation of goodwill. In turn, the Republic of Azerbaijan supported Armenia’s candidacy for membership of the Bureau of the COP from the Eastern European Group. This can be considered as the beginning of a new stage in the peace process between the two countries. That is, problems are solved through direct dialogue without any foreign state. This shows that peace should not be sought outside the region. It is possible to achieve peace within the region without a mediator. In the speech of President Ilham Aliyev on December 15 of this year at the meeting regarding the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP29 next year in our country, he noted that Armenia has come to terms with this situation. Mr. President said that the holding of the COP29 conference shows this once again: “The holding of large-scale international events, of course, puts a great responsibility on us. However, we have held many international events so far. Even this year, we held the International Astronautical Congress with great success. Everyone knows that this prestigious international event was held in Baku for the second time. This event was held 50 years ago in Baku, the capital of Soviet Azerbaijan, and this year in Baku, the capital of independent Azerbaijan. But, of course, COP29 does not compare with the events held so far. Even if we remember the European Games, 5 thousand athletes and about 3 thousand guests accompanying them came at that time. However, 10 thousand foreign representatives will come to our country at COP29, and Baku will become the center of the world within two weeks. According to certain possibilities, approximately 70-80 thousand foreign guests will be in our country during this period. It should be noted that Azerbaijan has joined the fight against global climate change by being a party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Our country aims to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases by 35 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. After 2030, a more ambitious target has been set, which consists of reducing the amount of greenhouse gases by 40 percent by 2050. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan has declared the freed lands of our country as “Green Energy” zone. It is planned to turn these areas into “Net zero emission” zones by 2050. President Ilham Aliyev stressed that he has no doubt that Azerbaijan will hold the COP29 international conference at a high level: “… this will be the next great success of our country and people. At the same time, Azerbaijan will show itself in this field as an oil and gas country, and everyone in the world will once again see that our agenda is related to green energy. The creation of green energy types and the transportation of green energy to world markets are currently the priority of our energy policy. This is reality and the whole world will see it again.” Azerbaijan’s hosting of COP29, one of the world’s largest and most important interstate events, in 2024 is another solemn victory of President Ilham Aliyev. This is the biggest success of our foreign policy after our chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and our membership in the Security Council. At the same time, it is a solid response to some circles that have been conducting an ugly campaign against Azerbaijan lately.
The Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP is the highest decision-making body of the Convention. Its secretariat is located in Bonn. Every year, government representatives from all over the world gather at the COP and call for joint efforts to prevent climate change and eliminate its consequences. The first meeting of the COP was held in Berlin in 1995.
Azerbaijan is seriously preparing for this prestigious international event. The holding of such a meeting under the chairmanship of President Ilham Aliyev shows this once again. At the meeting, the head of our state gave his tasks and instructions to the relevant institutions regarding the holding of COP29 in Azerbaijan. As always, the fulfillment of these tasks will be under the attention of President Ilham Aliyev.
